A DAY FOR THE QUEEN OF HEAVEN
“Lady of the Hearth Fire, Lady of the Forge Fire, Lady of Wisdom and Inspiration, Fiery Arrow of Knowledge, be with us. Brigit’s Litany Barbara Flaherty”
The Goddess Brigid is the ancient Irish keeper of the Flame + the Wells, She who blesses the. earth with gifts of fertility, birthed from the heavens with fire burning from the top of her head.
In her earliest incarnation, as Breo-Saighit, she was called the Flame of Ireland, Fiery Arrow. Legend says that when She was born, a tower of flame reaching from the top of her head to the heavens. Her birth, which took place at sunrise, is rumoured to have given the family house the appearance of being on fire. (https://mythicalireland.com/myths-and-legends/brigid-bright-goddess-of-the-gael/)
She is the Goddess of Poetry, Fertility, Healers, Poets, Smiths, Childbirth and Inspiration. She is said to lean over every cradle + bless the child that lies within it.
Her connection to fire is her ability to burn away the old + un-useful, to fertilise the land with the ashes of that which has passed.
Her association with fire also pertains to the creative life. Finding passion in our work is a major achievement. Handling our energies well requires maturity. It takes effort to find a balance where we have vitality without being consumed.
The plume of fire radiating from her head connects her to the life of the mind. She is the patron of scholars and colleges. One implication is that learning is a form of service to the divinities. She is also the protector of travelers. This applies to both those who explore new terrains and those seekers who are on inner journeys.
Around 453 C.E She was changed by the Church to Saint Brighid or Brigit.
To this day, one of her most common names in Gaelic is Muime Chriosd, "Foster-Mother of Christ." She was said to be the daughter of Dubthach, a Druid who brought her from Ireland to be raised on the Isle of Iona, sometimes called "The Druid's Isle."
To this day, Brigids lore and customs exist more then any other Celtic diety.
